Starter Packs Angus (SPA) was initiated by Scottish Churches Housing
Action, Angus Council and local churches. A committee was established
in 2002 with representatives from a number of local agencies (Angus
Citizens Advice Bureau, Angus Council, Angus Association of Voluntary
Organisations, Rowan Alba, New Community Schools, Furniture Project
Tayside and local churches).
SPA was initiated as a direct response to the serious problem
of homeless and needy individuals and families trying to access
and sustain a tenancy when they are unable to provide themselves
with basic household goods. Being without the necessities for
setting up house, or going into debt to acquire them, often results
in tenancies failing and people being caught in a cycle of repeat
homelessness. The service provided by SPA is intended to help
break that cycle.
The committee has worked closely with Dundee Starter Packs to
establish the level and type of work required to set up a project,
recognizing at all times the different difficulties inherent in
a rural area such as Angus. SPA has been successful in achieving
charitable status and securing sufficient funds to make the project
a reality..
